Several Elites traveled to Iowa City on the third weekend of January to shake off the rust in their first indoor race of the 2023 season. Olivia Baker put on a clinic to win the women’s 800m, leading the four-lap race wire-to-wire with an impressive opening time of 2:02.5. Her teammate Rachael Walters, coming off of her own performance in the women’s 600m the day prior, paced through 600m, and Baker didn’t shy away from the hot pace. Coming off of the curve onto the home stretch, Baker turned on the after-burners after noticing another athlete attempting to slingshot past, calling and defending her position. Gemma Finch opened her season with fifth place in the same international field with a 2:04.32. Hannah Segrave DNF’d. On the men’s side, Shane Streich toed the line in the 600m finishing fourth with a personal best of 1:18.13. Daniel Nixon fought hard in the 1k, an over-distance event for the half-miler, though ultimately faded in the last lap.
